In her works Hertha Miessner continues to think of herself consistently as a painter, although her works are photographies. She ‘unfolds’ her intermedial game in a literal and in a metaphoric sense. The pleat or fold is the place where the materiality of things begins to vibrate, to transmute, to get caught up in the ramifications of the medium. The masterly Baroque-like opulence of Hertha Miessner’s art seduces the viewerby embedding the motifs in darkness. She unlocks the soul of painting in her works. They simulate an enigmatic surface which is hiding something unexpected.
